Chuquicamata is still considered the largest open-pit copper mine in the world. Located 15 kilometers north of Calama, in the heart of the Atacama Desert, it is currently undergoing a major transformation process. Tunning has been part of this development, implementing highly challenging projects.
The electrical civil engineer Eduardo Morgado has been in charge of the complex projects that Tunning has developed for Codelco Chuquicamata subway. With more than 18 years of experience in mining sector projects, mainly in the areas of control systems, communications and instrumentation, he has faced these challenges with great versatility.
Between 2021 and 2023, Morgado led the contract that provided multiplatform support for the control systems and communication networks, “we kept all the systems focused on the safety of the subway mine and the personnel inside it, while ensuring operational continuity”, explains Morgado.
They worked with the ventilation, water and fuel systems, as well as fire detection, access control, signaling and traffic lights, among others. The other initiative, carried out since 2022, provided support services for the integrated security system at Chuquicamata subway.
In both contracts, Tunning provided assistance with highly qualified specialists and, taking into account the criticality of all the equipment, with attentive dedication to the work, “we provided specialists in continuous 7×7 shifts for 2 years, in addition to remote support services and 24/7 assistance to be prepared for possible emergencies”, explained the engineer.
