Safety assessment, key to making good decisions in demanding environments

Our operational and technical leader in Peru, César Rodríguez, tells how they have successfully implemented Tunning operations in projects such as the installation of an electrical Scada system at AngloAmerican’s Quellaveco mine.

César Rodríguez joined Tunning electric three years ago as a commissioning specialist. Today he serves as operational and technical leader in Peru, where the company is addressing various mining projects as part of its regional expansion to Latin America.

Hazard identification, risk assessment and control measures is one of the classic preventive safety strategies in mining. This leads to measures such as document management, periodic inspections in the work area, control of hazardous substances, drugs and alcoholic beverages, as well as prohibiting the entry of unauthorized personnel to the sites and continuous training for those who are integrated into the projects.

In this context, Rodríguez emphasizes the company’s emphasis on protecting workers, caring for the environment and good community relations through responsible operations.

Training to ensure safety

In order to fulfill the aforementioned purposes, Tunning electric implements two types of training: reactive and general.

“The reactive training are training activities that allow us to respond to specific problems or needs that we identify in an organization, associated with occupational hazards present in our activities according to the functions we perform, such as risk of electrocution or cuts by sharp surfaces when checking a board, among others, ”says Cesar.

On the other hand, general training covers topics of global interest, such as the recognition of unsafe acts and conditions, the identification of potential psychosocial risks, and the implementation of preventive measures for the treatment of physical or visual fatigue or the improvement of ergonomics, among others.

Our safety operation in Peru

In AngloAmerican’s Quellaveco project, for example, Tunning electric formed a team of four people in Peru, who were in charge of carrying out all the work in the field, or “on site” as they say in mining.

César Rodríguez was part of this team, whose coordinator in charge was Cleo Lopresti, who from Chile provided constant support to the group of professionals in the field. “Thus, we successfully completed the installation of the mining company’s medium voltage electrical Scada system, a very interesting project that today operates without any problems”, emphasizes Rodríguez.
